by ASU Sports Information Sept. 27, 2007 - DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Appalachian State women’s soccer team opened SoCon play with a stinging overtime defeat at Davidson by a score of 2-1. The Mountaineers fall to 5-1-2 and see their seven match unbeaten streak snapped. Davidson improves to 5-3-0 in the win and 1-0 in conference play. “Losses like this hurt” said head coach Ben Popoola. “We didn’t play very well in the first half, but we started to put things together in the second half. We did a great job to battle back and send the game to overtime. Unfortunately in the end we couldn’t hold them back.” Appalachian withstood the Davidson sedge for the first 58:10, during which the Wildcats took 12 shots, four on target. In the 59th minute, the Wildcats cashed in off a free kick to grab the 1-0 lead. With only five minutes remaining in regulation and down a goal, Davidson committed a handball in the center of the field, 20 yards out. Senior Jaclyn Hoffman took the direct free kick on goal and found the twine, beating the Davidson keeper. The unassisted goal is the first of the season for Hoffman and the second of her career. But with only 2:34 remaining in the second overtime period when a draw seemed to be a just result, Lauren Conner found a free ball in the six yard box and pushed the game winning goal home. Sophomore Emma White was given the loss in goal making seven saves and allowing 2 goals. The loss moves her season record to 4-1-1. Davidson led the Apps in shots by a 17-4 margin in regulation and 6-2 in overtime. ASU was called for more fouls by a 23-13 margin. Appalachian now returns home for a match-up with the College of Charleston on Sunday, September 30. The match kicks off at 1:00 pm in the ASU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free. | STANDINGS
