by Appalachian Sports Information October 6 - FARMVILLE, VA.- Appalachian field hockey dropped a tough game to Longwood this afternoon, 4-3. The Mountaineers had a stellar day on offense but could not quite put the match away. With this loss ASU falls to 2-10 on the season, and Longwood improves to 5-9. The outlook for the Apps was bleak early on, as the Lancers took a commanding 3-0 lead less than fifteen minutes into the match. In the first two minutes of play, Julia Hernandez scored off an assist from teammate Katie Claxton. Claxton went on to notch the next two goals for Longwood. Appalachian would not go away quietly, as sophomore Jessie Harris scored for the Mountaineers late in the first half. The Lancers took a 3-1 advantage into halftime. ASU had a resurgence of sorts in the second half. Mountaineer Jessie Harris led the way offensively as she recorded her second goal of the game just fourty five seconds into play. Longwood responded four minutes later with a goal of its own to take the 4-2 go-ahead. Although the Apps were down, they kept fighting as Harris scored her third goal, off an assist from teammate Nicole Morgan with twelve minutes to go. Impressive as Harris's and ASU's efforts were, they proved to not be enough as the Lancers pulled out the win by a narrow margin of 4-3. Defensively, goalkeepers Denise Adams and Sabra Holt split time, with Adams making two saves and Holt recording seven. Appalachian returns to play on Wednesday October 10, as it faces Catawba on its home turf at 7:45 p.m. ![]() | STANDINGS
