Women’s Soccer Rallies Late, but Falls to UNCG 2-1
by ASU Sports Information

Oct. 25, 2007 - GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Appalachian State women’s soccer team fell behind early to UNC Greensboro, but responded late in a loss 2-1. The Mountaineers fall to 9-4-3 (3-4-1). The Spartans improve their SoCon leading record to 11-3-1 (8-0-0) winners of their last eight.

“We didn’t start the game very strong tonight,” said head coach Ben Popoola. “But we responded well in the second half. Carella (DiMaggio) scored a great goal to bring us withinn one. In the end it wasn’t enough, but I am proud of our fight tonight..”

The first 25 minutes were played in a torrential downpour in which Appalachian worked hard to keep UNCG from scoring the match’s opening goal. The Spartans took 10 shots in the game’s opening minutes with four testing Appalachian’s sophomore goalkeeper Emma White.

With the downpour turning to only a drizzle, Greensboro opened the scoring in the 34th minute as a Spartan attack found room along the left side of the 18-yard box. Kelly Attayek coaxed White off her line and chipped the shot just over her head and into the goal.

Amanda Olson pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute as she headed home Lauren Lopez’s free kick from midfield.

Senior forward Lindsay Moore was responsible for Appalachian’s first scoring opportunity as she found the ball in and advanced position and took a strong shot from 12-yards. The Spartan keeper made her first save of the evening to keep the scoreline at 2-0 just before the halftime whistle.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, freshman Carella DiMaggio scored her third goal of the season from six yards to bring the Apps within one goal. Junior Casey Cleary assisted by playing the ball to DiMaggio in space.

The Mountaineers pressured late striving for the equalizer, but fell just short in the end, dropping the final 2-1.

White made eight saves between the pipes and allowed two goals in the loss, falling to 6-3-2 on the season.

Leading shooter for Appalachian was Cleary with three shots, one on goal. The Mountaineers were outshot 25-10 and conceded nine corners while earning two.

Appalachian will return home on Sunday, October 28 to face Wofford. Senior day festivities will begin at 2:00 p.m. as Appalachian State will honor this year’s class of three seniors.
