by ASU Sports Information

Oct. 28, 2007 - BOONE, N.C. - The Appalachian State women’s soccer team closed their home schedule on a sour note after being shutout by Wofford 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers, winless in their last two matches, fall to 9-5-3 (3-5-1) and need a win on Thursday against The Citadel to clinch a SoCon Tournament berth. Wofford improves to 7-9-2 (3-5-1) and is still in the hunt for a SoCon tournament berth.

Prior to Sunday’s match, Appalachian honored four seniors for their contributions to Appalachian soccer. Seniors Lindsay MooreJaclyn Hoffman, Lindsey Talley and Courtney O’Brien were honored for their four years in the black and gold.

The match wasn’t as cheerful for the Mountaineers as Wofford started strong and assaulted the Appalachian defense, taking the match’s first five shots including the opening goal in the 16th minute. Kendra Merchant won the ball in space at 25 yards then dribbled to the edge of the 18-yard box. Merchant took the low shot, besting Mountaineer sophomore keeper Emma White at the far post.

The Mountaineers responded by taking five shots in the remaining half hour of the first half. At the intermission, the Apps trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard and 10-5 on the shot chart. Appalachian committed 10 fouls while only drawing three whistles in the first half.

The second 45-minutes changed into a midfield struggle with possesion going back and forth. The Appalachian defense stood strong to not allow a second half goal on four shots (one on goal). The Mountaineer offense had scoring opportunities, but shots were hard to come by. ASU lost the second half shot chard 4-2 and 14-7 overall in the match.

Mountaineer keeper White made five saves but allowed a goal to fall to 6-4-3 on the season.

Appalachian will close the regular season on Thursday, November 1 on the road at The Citadel. The SoCon finale for both teams begins at 2:00 p.m.
