by Appalachian Sports Information November 1 - STANFORD, CALIF.- After putting up a valiant effort in the first 20 minutes of play, Appalachian field hockey dropped its first round NorPac tournament game to Stanford, 5-1. The Mountaineers move to 3-17 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 10-7. The Apps held their own until the 22nd minute, when Jess Zutz got Stanford on the board. Ten minutes later, the Cardinals scored again off a shot from Katherine Swank. Stanford was successful once more in front of the net before the end of the first period of play, to take a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime. The Cardinals dominated the second half of play as well, notching two more goals to take a five goal lead on Appalachian. The Mountaineers tried to respond to Stanford's offensive attack, with one of their own, as sophomore Jessie Harris scored the lone goal of the game for Appalachian in the 69th minute off an assist from senior Jessica Harris. Sophomore goalkeeper Denise Adams garnered a season high 20 saves on the afternoon for the Apps. The Mountaineers will now face Pacific in the consolation bracket, Friday November 2 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. ![]() | STANDINGS
