by Appalachian Sports Information

November 29, 2007 - Appalachian State University welcomes its second opponent to the Holmes Center this week when Wichita State visits for a Thursday evening non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.

The Mountaineers will be looking to redeem themselves after stumbling, 71-60, to Davidson in the Southern Conference opener on Monday evening. The home-opening loss dropped the team to an even 3-3 on the young season.

The Shockers are coming off a four-day layover between games, having last played on Saturday, a 75-63 win over Wyoming. The team is 3-2 on the season with losses to Baylor and Monmouth in the Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. The team posted wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Illinois-Chicago as well. The game will be broadcast regionally in Kansas and other pockets of the Great Plains as part of Wichita State’s television package.

Kellen Brand continues to lead ASU in scoring at a 14.7 points per game clip. He has scored in double-figures in five of ASU’s six games, including a career-high 27 point in the season opener at Charlotte.

Point guard Ryann Abraham is coming off a career-high 19-point performance against Davidson in which he converted on eight of his 12 shots from the field.

Phillip Thomasson and Gal Mekel are leading WSU with 11.2 points per game. Mekel also has a team-high 16 assists. Ramon Clemente is the team’s top rebounder with 9.0 per game.

Following the WSU game, ASU will hit the road the next morning to travel to Georgia Southern for a 3 p.m. game in Statesboro on Saturday. That game will be broadcast across the southeast on SportSouth
