Ervin Places Fifth, Mountaineers Claim 17th At Southern Scuffleby ASU Sports InformationDec. 30, 2007 -
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Thanks to a fifth place effort by senior
Scott Ervin at 149-pounds, the Appalachian State wrestling was able to finish in 17th place out of 28 total teams. ASU narrowly missed claiming top honors for any SoCon squad, finishing 5.5 pounds shy of host UNC Greensboro.
The No. 4 seed, Ervin made a nice run on Championship Sunday, winning five of his six matches to advance to the medal round. In the opener, Ervin defeated the No. 7 seed by a tech fall, 17-0. Next up was the No. 2 seed Darrion Caldwell, ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/NWCA NCAA Division I poll. Ervin pinned Caldwell after 4:15 to stay alive in the tournament. A pair of 5-1 and 3-0 victories put Ervin in position to take home a medal at the end of the tournament.
A loss at the hands of the No. 5 seed, Adam Hall of Bosie State, relegated Ervin to the fifth place match. In the medal match, Ervin was able to exact revenge on Mitch Smith of Hofstra, who defeated Ervin on Saturday evening. The medal is Ervin’s third of the season, the fifth place finish joins Ervin’s gold medals from the Reno Tournament of Champions and Keystone Classic earlier in the season.
Freshman
Dylan Temple was one of three Mountaineers to win a match on Championship Sunday. Temple earned a 6-5 decision over Erik Schuth of Ohio to proceed in the 184-pound wrestle-back bracket. Temple fell in the next round to UNC’s Nick Tenpenny, 1-4, eliminating the ASU freshman. Senior
Eddie Hutchinson advanced to Sunday’s second round of wrestle-backs at 157-pounds when his opponent forfeited, giving Hutchinson the pass. In the next round, Hutchinson was downed by Thomas Scotton of UNC, 3-5.
Sophomore
Frank Celorrio failed to advance in the 125-pound wrestle-back bracket, 2-5 to UVA’s Anthony Burke. Senior Tommy Hutchinson (Brandon, Fla./Brandon) was eliminated in the 165-pound wrestle-back by Edinboro’s Paul
Paddock, 1-2. Freshman
John Allen Griswold was bounced from the 197-pound wrestle-back by Binghamton’s Corey Waite, 4-7.
Senior
Terreyl Williams suffered a 5-13 majority decision loss to Bloomsburg’s Jason Guffey. Freshman
Austin Trotman, who advanced to Sunday in the 184-pound wrestle-back, was forced to forfeit his match due to injury.
Appalachian will now return to Boone before traveling to Arlington, Texas for the Lone Star Duals. Appalachian will compete in four dual matches against opponents to be determined starting at 10 a.m. on January 5.
