Buies Creek, N.C.- The Appalachian State wrestling team, losers of their last two matches, bounced back with a vengeance on Tuesday night to defeat the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs 34-12. Two pins and one tech fall buoyed the Mountaineers who didn’t trail all night. The win improves ASU to an 8-7 (1-1 SoCon) record on the season, while Gardner-Webb falls to 4-8-1.
Action got underway at 133-pounds with senior
Terreyl Williams up for the Apps. Williams scored two takedowns in the first period, helping him to a 10-5 victory over Rob Tate. At 141-pounds, senior
Marcus Cox got the nod for ASU. Cox earned three takedowns in the final two minutes to prevail over Chas Franz, 8-5. Senior
Scott Ervin ranked No. 12 in the latest NWCA poll, released today, took on Joshua Lowe at 149-pounds. Ervin dominated the match, earning a three-point near fall at 4:50, eventually leading to a 20-4 tech fall victory.
Senior
Eddie Hutchinson wasted no time in defeating Austin Reece at 157-pounds, pinning the Bulldog after only 1:20. Senior
Tommy Hutchinson followed suit with brother Eddie by winning his 165-pound match 5-4 over Brandon Couture. At 174-pounds, senior
Neal Martin faced Bulldog Chad Davis. Martin’s two takedowns, escape and riding time points were enough to take the 6-1 victory.
Freshman
Glen Holmes, making his first dual-match appearance of the season, took on Matthias Piasecki at 184-pounds. With nine seconds remaining in the match, and trailing, 6-9, Holmes was pinned by Piasecki for Gardner-Webb’s first points of the match. Freshman
Dylan Temple put ASU back in the win column with a 17-0 tech fall victory over Dustin Porter at 197-pounds. Temple took a pair of three-point near fall takedowns to help secure the victory.
Junior
Jared Campbell squared off against Windell Wilson at 285-pound bout. Campbell earned a quick takedown, and secured the pin only 2:13 into the match. The pin victory is Campbell’s first of the season. To conclude the match at 125-pounds, sophomore
John Harkey made his collegiate debut against Tommy Bennett. Bennett took the match to Harkey from the beginning, pinning the Mountaineer with 40 seconds remaining in the first period.
The Mountaineers will now return home to Varsity Gymnasium to face Davidson and Carson-Newman on Feb. 5. The tri-match gets underway at 6 p.m.
