by Appalachian Sports Information February 2, 2008 - State College, Penn.The Appalachian women’s track and field team faced stiff competition and numerous challenges throughout the weekend at the Penn State Sykes Sabock Challenge. The Mountaineers finished 13th overall in the meet, with the ninth ranked Nittany Lions grabbing the first place spot. Senior Kala Robertson led the way for the Apps in the one mile run, as she finished 19th overall with a time of 5:06. Her time moves her into eighth place on ASU’s all-time list in the event. Teammate Anna Baker came in 29th in the race with a time of 5:20. Robertson also was strong in the 800 meter run, as she finished 22nd with a time of 2:20, with Baker placing 29th and Melissa Kopec coming in 31st. In the 200m dash sophomore Ashley McKiver finished 12th, tied with Olivia Kizzee of Tulane, both having a time of 25.43. Improving their performances from the first day of action, sophomore Danielle Thorpe grabbed the runner-up spot in the triple jump, jumping 40-9.75. Vonteena Knotts finished eighth in the event with a jump of 36-11, while Jessica Mayela placed 12th. The Mountaineers posted solid performances in the field events as well, as freshman Rebecca Hazeltine placed tenth in the high jump, jumping 5-3.25, while Brittani Williams notched the tenth place spot in the shot put, with a throw of 43-1.50. Teammates Whitney Smyre and Lily Tallent who also competed in the shot put finished 17th and 19th respectively. ASU will continue with its 2008 campaign, as the Mountaineers host its lone meet of the season, the Appalachian Limited Open on February 8 at the Holmes Center. |
