by Appalachian Sports Information February 2, 2008 - Columbia, S.C.- The Appalachian men’s tennis squad opened its 2008 season on the road against a challenging South Carolina team. The Gamecocks, who came into Saturday’s match previously undefeated, proved to be a little too much for the Mountaineers, defeating ASU 6-1. With the loss, Appalachian moves to 0-1 on the season, while South Carolina improves to 4-0. Junior transfer Bobby Lake played in his first match for the Black and Gold at the No.1 singles spot. Lake faced a tough competitor in Yevgeny Supeko, as Lake fell 6-1, 7-5. Other Mountaineers faced challenging opponents as well, as senior Ryan Brookshaw battled Diego Cubas at the No. 2 spot, and narrowly lost in two sets, 6-3 and 6-4. Trent Constance, who played a the No.3 spot, could not quite pull off a win, as he was defeated 6-3 and 6-0. The only Mountaineer that was victorious on the day in singles play, was sophomore David Doverspike. Doverspike played Chris Sheehan at the No. 6 position, and defeated him in three sets, winning 6-1, 6-7 and 1-0. In doubles play, Ryan Brookshaw and Lee Floyd lost at the No.1 spot to Supeko/Cubas, falling 8-3. Constance/Jacobs were victorious at the No. 2 doubles spot, winning 8-7, while the duo of Lake/Doverspike fell to their opponents 8-5. Appalachian will continue with its 2008 campaign on February 9, as the Apps travel to Lyncburg, Va. to face Liberty. The match is set to get underway at 6 p.m. |
