by Appalachian Sports Information February 3, 2008 - DURHAM, N.C- Avenging their season-opening loss, the Appalachian women’s tennis team handily defeated N.C. Central on the road, winnning 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers now improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 0-2. In singles competition, junior Monica Tomas had a stellar afternoon, as she was victorious over Ashley Rogers in three sets, winning 7-5, 4-6 and 11-9. At the No. 2 spot, Tatiana Velasquez proved to be too much for Amanda Cash, handing the Mountaineers their only loss of the afternoon. Freshman Heather Prior had a strong showing at the No. 3 position, as she beat Stephanie Lee in two sets, winning 6-1 and 6-0. Elizabeth Holland, Caroline Mauch and Mallory Cook all grabbed wins for the Apps as well, at their respective spots. In doubles play, the duo of Heather Prior and Amanda Cash defeated Ashley Rogers and Tatiana Velasquez 8-2, at the No.1 position. At the No. 2 spot, Monica Tomas and Caroline Mauch were also successful, as they won 8-0. Rounding things out, the freshman pair of Elizabeth Holland and Laura Janke were also victorious in their match, winning 8-1. Appalachiain will continue with its 2008 campaign as the Apps head to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Gardner Webb, Saturday February 9 at Noon. |
