Williams Wins Both Throwing Events At ASU Limited Open

February 8, 2008 - BOONE, N.C. - Brittani Williams won a pair of events as the Appalachian State women's indoor track and field teams had a successful day in the lone home indoor meet of the spring on Friday. Williams took home first in both the shot put and weight throw.

In the 55-meter hurdles, Porsha' Evans-Hardy was the quickest Appalachian runner, at 8.64, for seventh place.

Ashley McKiver placed third to lead Appalachian in the 55-meter dash, at 7.11, just one-hundredth of a second off her best time.

Brittani Williams took home first place in the weight throw, with a best toss of 50 feet 9.25 inches. Whitney Smyre finished in third place with a personal-best mark of 50-8.25. Williams also won the shot put with a throw of 45 feet 0.25 inches. She was more than two feet ahead of the second-place finisher. Smyre also had a strong showoing, tossing 38-11.75 for fifth place.

In the women's high jump, Rebecca Hazeltine placed second, leaping 5 feet and three inches, just two inches off the first place finish. Bridgette Hills, Charlotte Walsh and Julie Ward each jumped 5-1.

Stephanie Payne led ASU and finished fourth at the meet in the mile run, with a time of 5:38.39. Amy Nielson was right behind in fifth place at 5:40.07.

Nadia Liriano was the lone Mountaineer in the 400-meter dash, and placed fifth with a time of 59.36.

UNC Charlotte's Shanice Jones set a new Holmes Center record of 1:16.11 in the 500-meter run, and Appalachian's Jasmine Thompson placed sxth at 1:24.20.

In the 300-meters, Michelle Brutus finished third at 42.86 with Bianca Harvey on her heels with a time of 42.98 for fourth place. Victoria Rosa was sixth in the event at 43.45. Wake Forest's Molly Kennedy set a new Holmes Center record with a 40.79 time.

Anna Baker was impressive in the 800-meter run and placed third with a time of 2:22.39. Melissa Kopec and Dani Reese also placed in the top ten, as Kopec was fifth at 2:26.30 and Reese ran 2:26.57 for sixth place.

Vonteena Knotts placed ninth in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 26.51.

In the 3000-meter run, Natalie Shaw led the Mountaineers with a second-place finish of 11:12.08. Emily Pomfrey finished fourth with a time of 11:18.45 while Heather Goldstein was fifth with a time of 11:26.69.

In the pole vault, Appalachian took home first and second place, as Shea Snow had a top mark of 11-5.75, while Kaitlyn Heeke reached 10-11.75.

The Mountaineers return to action next weekend at the Clemson Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
