by Appalachian Sports Information

March 2, 2008 - SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Appalachian State women's tennis squad fell to Wofford in its conference opener on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers handily defeated the Mountaineers 7-0. With the loss, ASU falls to 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while Wofford improves to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the Southern Conference.

In doubles action, the Mountaineers were unable to capitalize and grab the crucial doubles point. At the No.1 doubles spot, the duo of Anja Gugger and Mallory Cook were defeated by their opponents 8-1. Monica Tomas and Heather Prior were unsucessful as well, as they lost 8-0 at the No.2 position. At the No.3 spot, the pair of Amanda Cash and Lindsay King fell 8-2.

The Mountaineers struggled in singles action as well, as no one was able to pick up a win against the solid Wofford squad.

At the No.1 spot, Monica Tomas lost in two sets to Mary Ellen Henry, falling 6-2 and 6-1. Senior Anja Gugger was also defeated by her opponent as she lost 6-1 and 6-3.

Freshman Heather Prior lost for just the second time this season in singles action, as she was narrowly defeated in three sets. Prior took the first set winning 6-4, but lost in the second 6-3 and a late rally in the third set came up just short as she lost 10-8.

Junior Lindsay King also put up a strong battle against her opponent, playing at the No. 5 spot, but ended up losing 7-5 and 6-0.

Rounding out the match, freshman Elizabeth Holland played at the No. 6 spot instead of Caroline Mauch, and lost in two sets, 6-1 and 6-2.

Appalachian will look to rebound from its first conference loss, as the Apps continue with conference play Saturday March 8. The Mountaineers will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. to face the Chattanooga Mocs. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
