Men's Tennis Outlasts Mercer, Wins 4-3

March 10, 2008 - JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Appalachian State men’s tennis team picked up its third win of the season on Monday afternoon, as the Mountaineers narrowly defeated Mercer University 4-3. With the win, Appalachian improves to 3-4 on the season, while the Bears drop to 2-10.

The match got started off on the right foot, as ASU was able to win the crucial doubles point against a tough Mercer team.

The duo of Ryan Brookshaw and Lee Floyd were victorious at the No.1 doubles spot as they defeated their opponents 8-2. Teammates David Doverspike and Bobby Lake also picked up a win for the Mountaineers, winning 8-3. The team of Peter Jacobs and Trent Constance struggled at the No. 2 spot, falling 8-2.

Competition was stiff throughout the entire match, as it came down to the final match to decide the outcome.

At the No.1 singles spot, Bobby Lake fell to Tobias Ohrstrom in three sets, losing 6-1. 2-6 and 6-2. At the No. 2 position, Brookshaw was impressive as he was victorious winning 6-4 and 6-4. Floyd and Doverspike were also able to grab wins, as Floyd won in three sets and Doverspike in two.


The Mountaineers continue their stay in the Sunshine State as they face Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday March 11. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
