by Appalachian Sports Information March 11, 2008 - DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.- The Appalachian State men’s tennis team continued its stay in the Sunshine State as the Mountaineers traveled to Daytona Beach to take on the Bethune Cookman Wildcats. The Apps proved to be too much for the Wildcats, as they easily took home a victory winning 7-0. With the win ASU improves to .500 on the season with a 4-4 record, while Bethune Cookman drops to 2-6. For the second match in a row Appalachian came out strong in doubles play, with ASU grabbing wins in two out of the three matches. The duo of Ryan Brookshaw and Lee Floyd defeated Emil Vassiley and Stefan James 8-3 at the No.1 spot, while Peter Jacobs and Trent Constance were also victorious, beating their opponents 8-4 at the No.2 position. The Wildcat duo of Jerome Ward and Kristofer Martin handed Appalachian their only loss of the afternoon, as they beat Bobby Lake and David Doverspike at the No. 3 spot, winning 8-5. The impressive play of ASU continued throughout the afternoon in singles action, as every Mountaineer was able to notch a win. Junior Bobby Lake downed his opponent in two sets, winning 6-3 and 6-1, making it Lake’s second win at the No. 1 singles spot this season, while teammate Ryan Brookshaw followed Lake’s lead, as he also was victorious in two sets, winning 6-1 and 6-0. Sophomore Trent Constance grabbed his fourth win of the season at the No. 3 singles position, as he beat Stefan James 6-3 and 6-2, and junior Lee Floyd continued with his winning ways as well, as he grabbed his sixth win of the season at the No. 4 singles spot. Capping off the match, both Peter Jacobs and David Doverspike also picked up wins for the Apps, as they each defeated their opponents in two sets. The Mountaineers will carry on with the 2008 campaign on Wednesday March 12, as they take on Navy in Jacksonville, Fla. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. |
