Wildcats Prove To Be Too Much for Women's Tennis Team, Fall 7-0
by Appalachian Sports Information

March 15, 2008 - BOONE, N.C.- Playing in their second home match of the season, the Appalachian State women's tennis could not quite keep up with an impressive Davidson Wildcats squad, as the Mountaineers lost 7-0. With the loss, ASU falls to 4-6 on the season and 0-3 in SoCon action, while Davidson improves to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Just fifteen minutes into action, the match had to be suspended due to heavy rain and was moved to the Grandfather Mountain tennis courts.

In singles action, the Mountaineers struggled and were unable to pick up a win in any match. At the No.1 spot, senior Anja Gugger played a challenging opponent in Kelsey Linville, and fell in two sets, losing 6-2 and 6-3. Teammate Heather Prior who has only lost twice on the season in singles action had a tough go of it, as she lost in two sets as well, 6-3 and 6-0.

At the No. 3 position, Monica Tomas was defeated by Michele Fanney in two sets, and at the No. 4 spot, Amanda Cash lost 6-0 and 6-0 to her opponent.

Rounding out singles play, both Elizabeth Holland and Lindsay King were unable to pull out wins despite solid efforts, as each fell to their competition in two sets as well.

As for doubles play, the duo of Gugger and Mallory Cook competed at the No.1 spot and lost 8-3, while the team of Tomas and Prior fell as well, losing 8-2. Cash and King tried to rally a comeback, but fell short losing 8-2.

The Apps will have little time to rest, as they return to SoCon action Monday March 17, as they host Georgia Southern at home. The match will take place at the ASU tennis courts above Kidd Brewer Stadium and is set to begin at 1 p.m.
