by Appalachian Sports Information March 17, 2008 - CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The ASU men's tennis team came out strong and defeated a solid Charlotte squad Monday afternoon, winning 5-2. With the win, Apppalachian moves to 5-5 on the season, while the 49ers drop to 8-11 overall. The match got off to a good start, as the Mountaineers were victorious in all three of their doubles matches, and grabbed the crucial doubles point to help lead them to the win. At the No.1 doubles spot, the duo of Trent Constance and Bobby Lake defeated their opponents 8-5, while Ryan Brookshaw and Lee Floyd won in a close match, defeating the Bernhoerster brothers 8-7 at the No. 2 position. Rounding out doubles play, the team of David Doverspike and Peter Jacobs were successful as well, winning 8-5. In singles action, Lake defeated a tough opponent in Felix Bernhoerster at the No.1 spot, winning in three sets 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2. Brookshaw followed Lake's lead, as he grabbed a win over his competition in two sets, winning 6-4 and 6-2. At the three and four spots for the Apps, Constance fell in two sets, losing 7-5 and 6-1, while Floyd was able to pick up a win against Ricky Cuellar, winning 6-0 and 6-4. Capping off the match, Peter Jacobs defeated a solid opponent in Mortiz Bernhoerster, winning in three sets, 6-2, 4-6 and 7-5, and David Doverspike fell to his opponent in three sets, losing 1-6, 7-5 and 6-4. The Mountaineers look to carry their successes as they take on SoCon foe UNC Greensboro at home on Saturday March 22 at 1 p.m. |
