by ASU Sports Information March 20, 2008 - Appalachian State’s new head men’s soccer coach Shaun Pendleton is proud to announce the addition of Raleigh, N.C. native James Carpenter to the 2008 squad as a preferred walk-on. “James is an outstanding addition to our team,” said head coach Shaun Pendleton. “He’s an excellent forward from a winning program that has brought quality student-athletes to ASU in the past.” A product of the Capitol Area Soccer League’s elite team, Carpenter has won two NCYSA state cup titles as well as reaching the USYSL regional and national finals. In 2005, his CASL ’89 Elite team won the USYSL southern regional title. James also played for his high school, Enloe Magnet High School, on the varsity squad for all four seasons. In his senior season he was named co-captain and earned the coaches award. He also scored 23 goals in 21 games in his final season for the Eagles. "Everything I was looking for in a university, I found in Appalachian State," said Carpenter. - Spring Schedule - The Mountaineers will play nine games this spring under new head coach Shaun Pendleton. The slate of games opens on March 29 on the road at Gardner-Webb where ASU will face the Bulldogs and UNC Pembroke starting at 1 p.m. On April 6, the Mountaineers will face High Point and conference foe UNCG at 11 a.m. from the home of the Spartans. Saturday, April 12 will be ASU’s only match at the friendly confines as the Black and Gold will face Charlotte and James Madison starting at 1 p.m. A week later, ASU will face UNC Asheville in Morganton N.C. at the Western N.C. Challenge on April 14. Prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff, both teams will conduct a free clinic for local children. The schedule concludes on Wednesday April 23 with a pair of games against Emory & Henry and Lees McCrae in Banner Elk, N.C. The annual Alumni Weekend Game will be held on April 26 at 2 p.m. The match will pit the current Mountaineers against a team of former student-athletes.
