by Appalachian Sports Information March 23, 2008 - CULLOWHEE,N.C- The Appalachian State women's tennis team won its first conference game of the 2008 season as the Mountaineers defeated the Western Carolina Catamounts 7-0. With the win ASU improves to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in SoCon play, while WCU drops to 3-11 and 0-4 in conference action. The match got off to a strong start, as the Mountaineers were able to win the crucial doubles point. The duo of Anja Gugger and Heather Prior played at the No.2 doubles position for Appalachian and defeated their opponent 8-1, while the team of Lindsay King and Amanda Cash were also successful on the afternoon at the No.3 spot, winning 8-1. In singles action, every Mountaineer was able to pick up a win. Junior Monica Tomas had an impressive performance, as she was victorious over Trish Hanson at the No.1 spot, winning in three sets, 3-6, 6-4 and 10-4. Gugger posted a solid performance as well, as she won in two sets 7-6 and 6-4 at the No. 2 position. At the No.3 and No. 4 spots, both Prior and Cash notched wins over their competition, each winning in two sets. Capping off the match, Elizabeth Holland beat Emily Turke at the No. 5 singles spot 6-0 and 6-2, while King out-played her opponent, winning 6-0 and 6-0. The Apps look to carry its success into its next match, as the Mountaineers host UNC Greensboro Tuesday March 25. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the ASU tennis courts. |
