Women's Tennis Falls to SoCon Power-House Furman

April 2 - GREENVILLE, S.C.- The Appalachian State women's tennis team lost Wednesday afternoon to nationally ranked Furman, as the Mountaineers fell 7-0. With the loss, ASU drops to 6-10 overall and 1-7 in SoCon action, while the Paladins improve to 11-5 overall and remain undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record.

Furman came out strong in doubles play and proved to be too much for ASU, as no Mountaineers were able to win in doubles action.

At the No. 1 spot, the team of Anja Gugger and Laura Janke fell to an impressive Furman duo, losing 8-2. Monica Tomas and Anna Cotten were not able to grab a win either, as they lost 8-0 at the No. 2 position. Capping off doubles action, the duo of Lindsay King and Amanda Cash, who lost to Jessica Preeg and Lauren Tomory 8-0.

The Mountaineers struggled in singles action as well, as the Paladins handily defeated Appalachian at every position.

Gugger fell to nationally ranked Laura Gioia at the No. 1 position, losing in two sets, 6-0 and 6-1. Tomas had a tough time with her competition as well, as she lost in two sets, falling 6-0 and 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.

Cash and Elizabeth Holland played strong opponents at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, both falling in two sets.

Rounding out singles play, King and Caroline Mauch both lost at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots respectively, dropping their matches in two sets each.

Appalachian will return to action Friday April 4 as the Mountaineers will host High Point University. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
