by Appalachian Sports Information

April 6, 2008 - BOONE, N.C.- The Appalachian State women's tennis team dropped a tough match to SoCon competitor College of Charleston Sunday afternoon, as the Mountaineers lost 7-0. With the loss, Appalachian drops to 7-10 on the season and 1-8 in conference action, while the Cougars improve to 20-3 overall and 6-1 in SoCon play.

The match got off to a rocky start, as no Mountaineers were able to notch wins in doubles action.

At the No. 1 doubles spot, the duo of Anja Gugger and Laura Janke were defeated 8-0, by Laura Borza and Link Leskosky. Monica Tomas and Caroline Mauch put up a solid effort at the No. 2 doubles position, but fell 8-2.

The most impressive doubles performance of the afternoon came at the No. 3 spot, as Amanda Cash and Lindsay King went up 3-0 on their competition, before the Cougars rallied a comeback and defeated the duo 8-4.

The Apps struggled in singles play as well, as the Cougars proved to be too much.

At the No. 1 spot, Chelsea Albertz over-powered Gugger, handily winning in two sets, 6-1 and 6-1. Tomas posted a strong performance at the No. 2 position, but could not quite pull off a win, as she lost in two sets as well, falling 6-4 and 6-4.

Both Cash and Elizabeth Holland were unsuccessful at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, each dropping matches to their opponents in two sets.

Rounding out singles action, King and Caroline Mauch were not able to defeat their solid opponents, as each fell in two sets as well.

The Mountaineers look to rebound from their loss, as they host their last home match of the season, Thursday April 10 against East Carolina. The match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
