Men's Tennis Grabs Strong Win Over Davidson
by Appalachian Sport Information

April 11, 2008 - BOONE, N.C.- The Appalachian State men's tennis team came out strong Friday afternoon and never looked back, as the Mountaineers notched an impressive win over Southern Conference foe Davidson, winning 4-3. With the victory, ASU improves to 11-9 on the season and 4-4 in SoCon action, while the Wildcats drop to 14-6 overall and 5-3 in the conference.

The match began on a good note for the Apps, as they were able to win the ever so crucial doules point that helped propel them to the win.

At the No. 1 doubles spot, the duo of Bobby Lake and Trent Constance narrowly defeated a tough opponent in Flavius Simihaian and Ethan Jaffee, winning 9-7. Lee Floyd and Peter Jacobs kept the Mountaineers on the winning track at the No. 2 spot as they were also able to beat their opponents in a tough match, winning 9-7.

David Doverspike and Ryan Brookshaw posted an early 6-2 on Sam Burns and Walker Lyons, but watched the lead slip away as the two pairs were tied at eight all. Doverspike and Brookshaw prevailed, and were able to win 9-8 in a tie-breaker.

In singles action, Lake faced one of his strongest opponents all season in Simihaian, and put up a solid effort, but fell just short, losing in two sets, 6-2 and 6-2.

Constance played at the No. 2 spot for ASU for the first time all season, and was quite impressive as he handily defeated Eric Noble in two sets, winning 6-1 and 6-2. Brookshaw followed Constance's lead, and also downed his opponent, 6-1 and 6-2.

In order to win the match, one more Mountaineer had to be victorious on the afternoon, and Jacobs came up big for Appalachian at the No. 4 position. He won 7-5 in his first set, and then easily defeated his opponent in the second set 6-1 to give ASU the go-ahead win.

At the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, both Floyd and Doverspike put up strong performances but were not able to win, as Floyd fell in two sets and Doverspike in three.

The Mountaineers will look to carry its momentum from Friday's match into their last home match of the season, that will take place Saturday April 12 at 1 p.m. against the Citdael. A win over the Bulldogs would give ASU a number four seed for the upcoming Southern Conference tournament. Earlier this Davidson defeated Citadel 4-3.
