Colin Crothers

Years at ASU: Ninth Season

Colin Crothers is in his seventh year as head women’s tennis coach at Appalachian State University. The program has seen steady improvement with Crothers at the helm.

In 2006, Crothers led Appalachian State to ia 13-8 overall record and 5-4 mark in Southern Conference play.

In 1999, Crothers’ first season as head Mountaineer, ASU tallied a 3-15 record that included a 1-8 Southern Conference mark. His team rebounded in 2000 by posting a 12-7 mark, including a 6-3 record in league matches.

The Mountaineers also had a productive year in 2001. Under his tutelage, the Mountaineers finished with an overall record of 8-11 while finishing 4-5 in Southern Conference play, including an upset victory over Chattanooga in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament. The next three years saw steady improvement as well, highlighted by eight wins in 2004 including victories over Tampa and rival Western Carolina.

Prior to coming aboard as the head women’s tennis coach at Appalachian, Crothers was a teaching tennis professional. He served stints at top facilities in Pittsburgh, Pa., Atlanta, Ga., and at Boone’s Yonahlossee Resort.

He also plays in North Carolina state tournaments and was ranked as high as No. 7 in the state’s 35-and-over division in 1999.

A four-year letterwinner at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., Crothers graduated with a degree in business administration. While playing for the Saints, Crothers was tabbed a three-time NAIA Tennis all-American. He was also awarded Academic All-America plaudits in 1983. He also received a Master’s degree in mathematics from Appalachian in 1996.

Crothers is married to Dr. Doris Bazzini, a psychology professor at Appalachian State. The couple has two sons: Joel Peter (6) and Sean Colin (4). They reside in Boone.
